Educational awards and a new award recognizing volunteers launched

Seven educational scholarships and the creation of a new award recognizing the critical role of volunteers within the healthcare system were announced on 1 November 2009.

“These awards are an investment in some of the best and brightest healthcare providers and researchers in Canada,” said Patricia Coutts, incoming Association President and a Registered Nurse. “These women and men, as evident from their careers to date, have demonstrated a promising future as ground-breaking practitioners of wound care.”

Coutts’ comments were echoed by Karen Philp, CAWC Chief Executive Officer. “Research into “best practices” is essential to the sustainability of Canada’s public healthcare system. If we are to maintain and advance the quality of patient care in our country, we must identify new ways to free up resources for reallocation into new or expanding areas of wound care and prevention.”

The following awards were announced:

  • Marlene Adele Varga was awarded the Dr. Warren L. Rottman Education
  • Terry Denise Labate was awarded the Molnlycke Health Care Educational Scholarship
  • Kathleen Elizabeth Anthony was awarded the Cathy Harley Educational Grant in Memory of Aldora Harder and Cathy Foster
  • Karen Llewellyn Bruton was awarded the Elise Sorensen RN Memorial Scholarship
  • Kyle Walter Goettl was awarded the T.J. Smith Global Wound Academy Award
  • Eileen Maria Emmot was awarded the ConvaTec Scholarship for Advancing Wound Care Education
  • Teresa L. Stone was awarded the Dr. Louis C. Argenta Best Practices and Wound Care Team Grant

The Dr. David Keast Award for Volunteerism in recognition of the important yet often underappreciated role of volunteers in supporting our healthcare system was announced. The first recipient of the $1,000 award will be honoured at the Association’s 16th annual professional conference in Calgary.

CAWC Announces New CEO!
The CAWC is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Karen Philp as Chief Executive Officer, effective July 13, 2009. “We're extremely pleased to have Karen Philp join us in our efforts to support the education, prevention and treatment of various forms of wounds,” said Cathy Burrows, President of the Board of Directors. “Karen Philp has distinguished herself as a strong leader who will proactively champion the CAWC's vision to promote the prevention and management of wounds on behalf of Canadian patients and health-care providers.” For more details on Karen Philp, please download the media release (PDF).

The Clinic Directory!
The long-awaited Clinic Directory is finally here! We recently compiled a bilingual directory of 11 wound-care clinics from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. Since many patients do not know where to turn when they have wounds that will not heal, the Clinic Directory is an important tool for improving patient outcomes. Also, the directory enables clinicians who do not specialize in wound care to refer patients in need. To view the Clinic Directory, please click here.

The all-in-one slide CD in English and French!
The CAWC is pleased to introduce its new slide CD; one of our best teaching tools is now even better. In the past we offered a selection of CDs in each language. After two years of reviews and updates, we are launching one master CD to replace all of the others. It contains dozens of remastered slides, in both French and English. CAWC is now Canada’s definitive source for monofilaments
Monofilaments have been difficult to source in Canada and the CAWC has taken the steps necessary to have these items produced to our specifications for sale through our online Boutique. These simple devices are used to test patients for loss of protective sensation and are invaluable to both clinicians and patients. For more information about monofilaments and their use, please visit the Monofilament page, or go directly to the Boutique to place an order.

Learn online
The CAWC is now pleased to provide an online self-study module that supports the development of a basic knowledge of skin, its function, and maintenance.
