New diabetes foot care tool coming soon for patients!

The Public Health Agency of Canada is supporting the CAWC to develop a patient tool on best practices in diabetes foot care that will help Canadians living with diabetes to prevent ulcers that may lead to amputation.

CAWC will shortly be announcing the creation of an Expert Advisory Committee with representatives from our partners to develop this practical hands-on tool which we think will help not only Canadians at high risk of diabetes foots ulcers, but also the healthcare professionals who support them in effective wound management and prevention. Stay tuned for more information!

A New Look for the CAWC
Pressure Ulcer Awareness and Prevention (PUAP) Program

The CAWC's Pressure Ulcer Awareness and Prevention (PUAP) program will have a new look in January 2010!

After successfully reducing the prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers in facilities across Canada, the CAWC is expanding the PUAP program in order to enable more institutions to achieve significant benefits for their patients and clients.

Beginning in January, the PUAP program will fall under the umbrella of the new CAWC Institute of Wound Management and Prevention (CAWC Institute). The CAWC Institute will provide professional training in basic and advanced wound management, as well as in the prevention of pressure ulcers and other chronic wounds. The Institute will consist of a number of levels of professional education related to wound management and prevention. Level 3 will focus on prevention, drawing heavily from the former PUAP program. A pressure ulcer prevention program starter kit will be available for purchase for those who complete Level 3.

The first Level 3 prevention workshop will be offered in Toronto in March 2010. Stay tuned for more details!

So what do these changes mean for you?

First, rather than purchase the former program for an annual fee, our new prevention program will offer greater flexibility. You will be able to develop and train “prevention champion teams” and implement a prevention program in your facility according to your needs. Send your prevention “site champions” to Level 3 of the CAWC Institute and purchase a pressure ulcer prevention program starter kit to implement in your facility. Additional materials to help you prevent pressure ulcers and other chronic wounds will be available for purchase in future through our online Boutique.

Second, site champions can register and be trained any time the Level 3 prevention workshop is offered.

Third, those who attend the Level 3 prevention workshop will have unlimited access – free of charge – to pressure ulcer prevention experts through the CAWC website.

Le site Web de l’ACSP est en cours de remaniement. Le site remanié, comportant de nouvelles informations sur la gestion et la prévention des plaies sera lancé en janvier 2010, un rendez-vous à ne pas manquer !
